Chirala


Weavers carrying rich artistic lineage hail from the Padmasali, Devanga and Pattusali communities and are the true sons of the soil of this cluster producing finest of fabrics for centuries now.

Located about 1000 kms from Vijayawada a major town in the South Eastern State of Andhra Pradesh, a.k.a. 'KSHIRAPURI', the name Chirala when split in two words means - saree (Chira) and possessing (la). The place has been referred to by the famous traveler Marco Polo in his travelogue haling the weaving skill and craftsmanship of the local artisans at creating a saree that could fit in a match box!

Midway in its timeline, Chirala got famous for its traditional varieties of zari sarees and dhotis (local wrap around for men).
